Howard's current and recent work includes: Guys and Dolls and Heroes in the West End, Mamma Mia! (London, Broadway, Las Vegas, Hamburg, Japan, Stockholm, Australia and US tour), Mammals (Bush and tour), Rebecca (tour), Skellig (Young Vic) and Edward Scissorhands (Sadler's Wells and tour).

His work in the West End includes: Suddenly Last Summer (Albery), Oleanna (Garrick), The Master Builder (Albery), Ragtime (Piccadilly), The Witches of Eastwick (Theatre Royal, Drury Lane, and Prince of Wales), Cat on a Hot Tin Roof (Lyric). On Broadway his work includes Putting It Together and Cat on a Hot Tin Roof.

Howard's opera and dance work includes Il Trovatore, Aida, I Masnadieri and Otello (ROH), Beatrice and Benedict and Cavalleria Rusticana/ Pagliacci (Welsh National Opera and Opera Australia), Swan Lake and Romeo and Juliet (English National Ballet at the Royal Albert Hall), Matthew Bourne's Nutcracker! (Sadler's Wells), Albert Herring (Opera North), The Elixir of Love (English National Opera) and The Makropulos Case and Nabucco (Metropolitan Opera, New York).

Howard has been nominated six times as Best Lighting Designer in the Laurence Olivier Awards and was the recipient of the 2001 Australian Green Room Award for his work on Mamma Mia!
